Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge is in waters near to our family’s heart. We spent our twin daughters’ sixteenth birthdays fishing the Hannibal Bank and Isla Coiba. We have been many places and the fishing experience in Panama is at the very top of the list. This is a small lodge that is perfect for a group wanting a remote adventure all to themselves.

The fishing season realistically runs from November through August. The rainiest months in Panama are September and October. The “dry” season is from November through April and the “wet” or winter season is May through November. Our trip was in April and it was fantastic. Both the inshore and offshore fishing are fantastic in this location. Blue, black, and stripe marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado and more are offshore. Roosterfish, Cubera snapper, grouper Spanish mackerel, and a variety of jack fish are inshore with lots of action. Sport Fish Panama’s private island is 12 miles offshore with easy access to the fishing grounds. You are literally minutes away from the prime fishing versus a 45 minute run each way from the coast.
Panama is the meeting point of cool water traveling in the Humboldt Current up the west coast of South America and warmer water coming south down from Costa Rica. The Humboldt Current flows from the Antarctic northward creating deep, nutrient rich water that helps create many marine ecosystems including those in the Galapagos Islands. The Current intersects with warmer water off the coast of Panama and also encounters under water structures including the Hannibal Bank which forces nutrients up to the surface water. The rich waters produce plankton which attracts bait fish that attract other fish which then attract bigger fish and ultimately the world record fish in these waters.
